How to Manage a Blog's Layout
Introduction
The blog layout is the master template for your blog: it sets where the header, footer, navigation, and the blog content placeholder sit on every page that shares this shell. On systeme.io, you edit it once under Blog Layout instead of rebuilding the same chrome on Home, About, and listing pages.
This guide expands How to manage a blog's layout.
What the Blog Layout Controls
The blog layout determines the overall design of your blog pages. This template defines the position of common elements (for example Header and Footer) as well as the blog content placeholder—the zone where each page injects its own body (text, listings, forms).
- Elements you add to the layout appear on all pages that use the blog layout
- Individual page content still lives in each page editor; the placeholder swaps per URL
- Default typography and Heading typography in layout settings apply across those pages
Individual posts use a separate post layout template—not the same editor as Blog Layout.
What You Need
- A systeme.io account ( plan)
- An existing blog ( create a blog)
Step 1: Open the Blog Layout Editor
To manage blog template layout:
- Go to Blogs under the Sites tab
- Click your blog's name
- Click the Blog Layout button
This opens the page editor. From the left-side menu you can add Elements or Blocks. You will also see a default header and footer that you can customize.
Step 2: Customize Header, Footer, and Global Blocks
- Click the header or footer to adjust logo, colors, and spacing
- Edit the Menu element for navigation ( create a blog menu)
- Drag new Elements or Blocks above or below the blog content placeholder (e.g. announcement bar, social icons)
- Do not remove the content placeholder—it is where page-specific HTML loads
Preview with View blog from the blog dashboard on systeme.io after saving the layout.
Step 3: Typography and Settings
In the Settings panel on the left of the layout editor:
- Modify Default typography for body text sitewide on layout pages
- Modify Heading typography for H1–H6 consistency
Save the layout when finished. Changes propagate to all pages using the default blog layout.
When a Page Ignores Blog Layout
On a blog Page, the three-dots menu includes Don't use blog layout. That page becomes a standalone design without the global header/footer/menu. Use sparingly for landing-style pages; keep most of the site on the shared layout for brand consistency ( create blog pages).
Post List Page Inside the Layout
The mandatory Post list page lives inside the same shell: customize listing cards, posts per page, and card style in the page editor while the layout still supplies header and footer ( configure post list page—use your site's slug if different).
Troubleshooting
Layout edits missing on live site
Save Blog Layout; clear cache; confirm you're not viewing a page with don't use blog layout.
Content area blank
Blog content placeholder removed or overlapped—restore placeholder from template or undo.
Menu differs between pages
One page may be off-layout; menu is edited in Blog Layout only for layout-bound pages.
