How to trigger automations when a course, module or lecture is completed on systeme.io

One of the most powerful features of systeme.io is the ability to automatically trigger actions when a student completes a course, a module, or even a single lecture. This opens the door to advanced nurturing, tagging, email sequences, congratulations messages, upsells, and much more.

You can use these triggers both in classic Automation Rules and in more advanced Workflows.

Here is the complete guide.

1. Using the “Course completed” trigger

This trigger fires when a student reaches 100% progress on a course (all lectures marked as complete).

In Automation Rules

  1. Go to Automations → Rules
  2. Click Create
  3. Add the trigger Course completed
  4. Select the specific course
  5. Add any actions you want (send email, add tag, enroll in another course, etc.)
  6. Save the rule

In Workflows

  1. Go to Automations → Workflows
  2. Create a new workflow
  3. Add the trigger Course completed and select the course
  4. Build the rest of the workflow with actions, delays, and conditions

This is perfect for sending a congratulatory email, issuing a certificate reminder, or moving the student into a post-course sequence.

2. Using the “Module completed” trigger

This trigger gives you more precision.

  • If you select only a course → the automation runs when any module of that course is completed
  • If you select a course + a specific module → the automation runs only when that exact module is finished

You can use it in both Rules and Workflows the same way as the course trigger.

Great for mid-course encouragement emails or unlocking bonuses after a specific module.

3. Using the “Lecture completed” trigger

This is the most granular option.

  • Select only a course → triggers on any lecture completed in that course
  • Select a course + module → triggers on any lecture inside that module
  • Select a course + module + lecture → triggers only when that specific lecture is completed

This allows you to send a short follow-up after every important lesson, add progressive tags, or create a highly personalized experience.

Practical use cases

  • Send a “Congratulations!” email when the whole course is completed
  • Add a tag after a specific module so you can segment students
  • Enroll the student in a new course or a free bonus when they finish
  • Trigger a sales sequence for an upsell after completion
  • Send a short summary or next-step email after each key lecture
